The 5 Cows in the Years of Ox, me which one ?

Dear Friends,

Lets talk a bit about Ox since we will be entering Year of the Ox in just a few days.

In posting 己丑年 (Ji Chou Year) : 2009, Year of Ox it was said that there are 5 different type of Oxen in the 60-year cycle of Chinese Calendar.

The mechanism of the 60-year cycle was briefly discussed in postings  The Cosmic Forces in Year 2008 and Red Underwear & Your Birthday in Anno F.X. ? We see the 60-year cycle as a result of combination of 2 rotating sub-cycles, namely :

.

1. 天干 Cycle : (“tian gan”, Heavenly Axis, the Vertical Axis), consisting of the following 10 elements :

甲、乙、丙、丁、戊、己、庚、辛、壬、癸

(Jia,    Ji,       Bing,   Ding,   Wu,      Ji,     Gen,     Xin,    Ren,  Gui)

.

2. 地支 Cycle : (“di zhi”, Earthly Axis, the Horizontal Axis), consisting of the following 12 elements :

子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥

(Zi,     Chou,  Yin,    Mao,  Cheng, Si,     Wu,      Wei,  Sheng, You,   Xu,    Hai)

.

For both sub-cycles,

the Odd-position elements (such as and    ) are the Yang elements and,

the Even-position elements (such as and    ) are the Yin elements.

So we see for the 2 rotating sub-cycles, Yang elements of Tian-gan Cycle combine only with Yang elements of Di-zhi Cycle (similarly for Yin elements) in the 60-year cycle, starting from 子, 丑, 寅..…and ends  in . This 60-year cycle is called “一甲子”, i.e. One Jia-zi cycle.

When people talk about the Chinese Zodiac cycle (i.e. the Animal Cycle), they are refering to the 地支 Cycle of 12 elements, each represented by an animal sign. (You will therefore immediately see that the 12 animals have got nothing to do with calendar, just an easy way for normal folks to remember, given learned scholars were restricted to the privileged few in ancient time). The Animal Cycle is only a small part of the 60-year cycle, since each Animal Cycle is only 12 years and it does not tell much about the nature of the animals.

  • You will  realise that each animal sign will occur 5 times in the 60-year cycle. For example the year Ox, represented by   , will appear 5 times in  One Jia-zi cycle.

Next, you will also realise that each Ox will be different from the other 4 Oxen in the cycle because each is combined with a different 天干 element, therefore    will appear 5 times in One Jia-zi cycle as :

  • 丑, 丑, 丑, 丑,

You will also recall from the rules of Tian-gan/Di-zhi combination described earlier, all the 5 Oxen are Yin (call them females if you prefer).

  • Year of Ox is therefore a misnomer. As per Webster dictionary, an Ox is “An adult castrated bull of the genus Bos,B. taurus” ! It is more correct to say Year of the Cow. (since all s  are Yin)

Before risking making this posting a book, the conclusion of the 5 cows are :

  • 丑           : Metal Cow  (White Cow)
  • 丑           : Wooden Cow (Green Cow)
  • ……..: Earthen Cow (Earth-Yellow Cow)
  • 丑           : Water Cow (Black Cow)
  • 丑           : Fire Cow (Red Cow)

So you see, , the 3rd in the series, afterall, is a poor domestic Yellow Cow, toiling nonstop in the paddy field.

Before you start creating a spread sheet and wonder which “cow” you might be, unless you are around 60, you are not “Yellow Cow”.

.

  1. What? The ox is an adult castrated bull???
That is bad news for year 2009.
Oh dear, how can we expect a bull run this year when we have the year of the Ox (a castrated bull!!)??
YL, you are smart, you collected your ang pau already.
I must do the same, collect my ang pau first. Today is my last day to do so. Must run! 🙂 🙂

  2. This is a very informative and interesting post. Thank you very much!
Wonder if there are some good and easy to read books on this. My understandings of ancient Chinese language is poor so usually shy away from those books or info …

  3. Looking at the 5 cows…none looks like it could run! So…Yr 2009 will be a slow stubborn cow thot, throwing piles of dung along it’s way. Making the road sweepers busy cleaning up it’s image.

I’m going in for another Ang Pow! Have scooped up much Capitaland shares accidentally, when it crashes. Got the shares at 2.4 & 2.51 over 2 consequitive nights of placing lowest bids. Good thing the stocks crashes 1 at a time, so it’s good for us who have limited cash for such plays. Hope to hold these shares a long as possible! Hehehe….but not 5 yrs…..maybe 5 wks! 🙂

  4. Got two cows

  5. Wow! It was an anxious moment before the Yr of the Ox with STI dipping below 1,700!!!

I scooped up some shares of Keppel Corp at 4.07 & 4.08, now it rose back to 4.1.

Tried to net others but all fell through, so only managed to catch KepCorp & Capitaland. Hope after CNY, they wll all rise to give me more angpow!

Should rise, since S’pore had such good news- budget to save companies.

  6. Hi All,

    Looking at it positively,

“Earth Cow” is like mother, the Great Mother Earth,

    it gives lives,
    it supports lives,
it takes all the hits quietly,
it takes all the abuses without ever complaining,
it never claim credit for anything.

So Earth Cow is, after all, greatest !

  7. CT,

I guess there are some easy to read books on these stuff which you might be able to find in the book stores. Hope my postings so far do help to provide you with some ABCs. To form words and sentences, you have to piece up the ABCs.

I didn’t pick this up from Feng-shui books, mainly from texts related to Chinese Medicines which look at these things from the perspective of how they affect health system.

I try to limit each posting to around a A4 size, to make them simple. Sorry this posting failed on this respect. I will see how I can trim it further.

  8. YL, so funny!!

So, xiaoyao2, from your posting (it is beginning to sink in on me after some slooooow reading) it means we are having a very good earthly cow year. Maybe in farmer terms it means we will have to toil our fair share and have enough to eat and enough for comfort but not too luxurious? And it should also be a year of no complaining (take everything in our stride?) and be content with what we have?

In other words, get down to earth??
OK, OK I get it. We go back to basics.

  9. YL, You make the STI very exciting in these unexciting market times!
Anyone reading your comments can feel your excitement and enthusiasm. I can feel it all the way in Tokyo!

Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year (more fa cai next year!!) 🙂 🙂

  10. ch,

I can’t really tell you what it is, firstly it is different to different person (as per earlier postings on PCOs) and secondly if I tell you, then the “conditions” will have changed and you will get a different set of results.

I know it is kind of weird but then again, it is kind of “organic” type of thing, like a connected web, you pull one point, the rest of the web are all affected.

As for the matter on Yellow Cow, it depends on whether one is the giver or taker. And where there’s a giver, there’s a taker.

Additionally, in postings “己丑年 (Ji Chou Year) : 2009, Year of Ox” and “Strengthen your Middle Qi”, we discussed the importance of enhancing the Earth Qi (Middle Qi) to promote health.

    Hope above clarifies.

  11. Hi All,

All the best for the next few days of CNY celebrations! I going to KL tomorrow morning. You all enjoy your cow, remember to slaughter the right cow! Don’t slaughter the yellow one! It’s for the rest of Yr 09! 🙂

CH, you like my 2 cows or the 5 cows? Hehehe…have I exasperated Xiaoyao2?

Now holiday spirit already! But my office, some staff are working everyday from tomorrow through the whole CNY holidays, trying to keep to delivery schedules in these difficult times. Thank God for them…because of them, we can enjoy! 🙂

  12. YL, Sure I love your 2 cows!! But five cows or two cows, who cares, the more the merrier.

YL, you are one lucky girl.
First you can go home to KL to enjoy the food from your mother and sisters, then you have your staff to toil for you throughout CNY. Then you tell us you have already cashed in your ang pau!
Hey xiaoyoa2 must have missed something here in his postings. He forgot to point out that 2009 is the lucky star year for YL, but for the rest of us we will have to toil and stay on earth and continue to lick the wounds of Year 2008 fallen markets.

xiaoayo2, now you make the cow more mysterious! Aiyoh!
I thought I understood it, but now I am more confused. No wonder CT was asking for a book to read.

  13. Hi, xiaoyao2, I found this article on bloomberg news.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601213&refer=home&sid=aWcbMIwbLwbo

I thought your postings gave us more to think about.
What was just posted in the bloomberg column was nothing new, as if we do not already know by now how abd things are and how bad it is going to be. Nothing astrological about it, as they claim.

Seriously, xiaoyao2, you should start a xiaoyao2 investment or life advisory column or some sort like that. Don’t say you got your knowledge from reading TCM books (not so mysterious and magical then), say you looked into the crystal ball or some tea leaves and it all came upon you that Year 2009 will be…… !!

YL, CT, MF and myself can join your “board of directors” to make it more genuine and trustworthy! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  14. white cow, green cow, yellow cow, black cow or red cow, slaughter not.

  15. CH, most likely you already had your ‘lucky’ time & have enjoyed yrs of blessings. There is a time for everything. Ups & downs. Now is just a down which will pass & you will be up again. 🙂

Took 3 hrs to cross the Tuas Causeway to get into Johore. Was a real big jam at both causeways. Many cars on highway & saw 2 accidents involving few cars, just near each other, just when a short drizzle came down. Started from home at 11am & reached mum’s home at 6.30pm with 2 stops along highway for lunch & toilet.

Wish the 2 countries will do away with these checkpoints & passports thing. It’s a real bottleneck during festive seasons.

  16. xiaoyao2,
I watched a video interview by Bloomberg with Lillian Too, the famous M’sian feng shui master, about her predictions on investments for the year 2009. I usually do not care much about feng shui, but thought I would check it out anyway. Interestingly she mentioned almost the same thing as what you said. She mentioned the eathly/earthen ox, and that she would make investments this year with caution and there should be some upside although limited. Having said that she said that there will be a downturn sometime in October as the water element will be strong during that period.
There were also other so called astrologers from HK who gave their predictions for investments , esp in the stock market for 2009. Limited upside, blah blah, yeah but that is not new anymore. Does not need an astrologer or feng shui master to talk about that.

Hmmm, these so-called feng shui masters basically read the same literature but they made it sound like they read it from tea leaves or from some crystal ball.
xiaoyao2, just start posting a column in a newspaper and you will be rich and famous in no time. One word of caution, don’t say you got the information from reading TCM books or literature by the old wise men. Say you read it from your crystal ball! Sure to sell better. 🙂 🙂

  17. ch,

i can’t write feng shui, in a very narrow individual level, it can be quite meaningless because one man’s meat is another man’s poison.

secondly, it is also the secrets of the heaven, it is beyond us to do the predictions.

and last but not least, the moment a public prediction is made, “conditions” change and the out come is therefore altered.

of course feng shui is a money making machine. It is just like a Christmas tree, you have a basic tree, and you can decorate anything on it as far as you can stretch your imagination.

i look at cosmic forces from health perspective, investment are man-made activities, so you can’t really say they will follow the rules of nature at any one time, though over time, the mean-reversion will mean they too will have to follow the natural laws.

  18. Agreed.
We should use the wisdom of old to guide our lives in terms of health, not predict fengshui!

  19. YL,

I just noticed that you might be coming back to the Spore market to pick up your new year ang pau, if your purchasing criteria is still 1,600 for the Straits Index.

Hey, uh don’t forget to leave some on the table for the less lucky ones like me to pick up!

  20. Hi CH & All,

So we are back to work again! I was back to office since last Thurs. The real impact of no maid now sinks in, with my mum back to M’sia. Have been working non stop; housework & office work. Children also chip in to do ironing, laundry, cooking & watering. Body ached more than after run 10km Marathon!

Recession has been quite bad in S’pore as you all may know. Thank God, we still have many orders from last yr, to last production till mid of this yr. Even a friend wants to work as my domestic helper but my family declined the offer- unable to make a friend work for our own personal needs.

Yesterday, I’ve already scooped up some DBS & UOB shares just as the market closed at 5pm. Now the shares have risen but I intend to hold for awhile to get more profit. 🙂 KepCorp & CapLand, no movement but I still think it’s good buy.

Hehehe….so busy, still can buy shares! Hiyah, because of all of you lah! Otherwise, I may not be interested in these. 🙂

  21. Hi, welcome back to reality!!

Over here, no Chinese New Year hols, so went to work throughout except for a Sunday evening where we celebrated with some friends who were likewise “stuck” in Tokyo.

Yeah, don’t hire friends, no matter what. They will soon not be friends anymore. It is difficult to draw the line between employer/employee/friends and can get very sensitive. They can help for a few days, but beyond that the politics can get complicated.

Remember, when things get tough, wear sunglasses indoors! 🙂 🙂

  22. Ok CH, I think I better go buy sunglasses! Good advice. 🙂

That morning, after waking up & before even taking breakfast, I passed by the living rm & saw the layer of dust on the sofa as the sunlight shined on it. I took up a cloth & starting wiping sofa, then table, then stove, then proceeded to more & more area….until I finally completed 8 hrs of house work! Ate brunch & light supper, that’s all!

Yeah, if wear sunglasses, I would not have seen the dust, then I would have plopped onto the chair & enjoy my breakfast & newspaper….. 🙂

  23. YL, I used to be like you, could not stand one speck of dust!

Now, tidak apa. If the dust becomes too obvious, I grab a piece of tissue from the nearest box and give it a quick swipe. I used to also shine all my silver once every two weeks, (yes, with Godard’s silver cleaner), but now, I have not shined it for years and they still appear fine (?) or at least I think so!

When guests come around, I spray my rooms with Febreze and hope they don’t smell it. Or I brew one of those aromatherapy thingy with heavy duty lavender or cedar wood in each room so that any smell of sweat and smelly socks is masked by the smell of lavender! If you need any more clever “hide me since I have no maid” tricks, feel free to contact me anytime. Meanwhile, keep those sunglasses on, rain or shine!!

  24. I’m feeling like the Earthern Cow already….! Though you did mention that it only applies to those around 60 yrs old.

Literally speaking, I’m feeling like the old loyal cow, toiling away day & night, everyday. Does that mean I can make it better through this yr 2009? Hehehe….!

Just 2 mths ago, before Jan 15th, I was living like a Queen, no need to work my body aching except for gym & exercise. Don’t even need to wash the cup I drank, food laid on the table, only need to work at putting the food into my mouth. Just give a yell & somebody will clear the food & things from the table…..

If being the Earthern Cow, will get me through Yr 2009, so be it! 🙂

Have been enjoying Mandarin oldie songs by Theresa Teng & Fei Yu Chin, melancholic & nostalgic…..while working in office after office hrs, off course! Hmmm…..do I sound like 60 yrs already?? Better go & book a holiday to some island & have a change. Go snorkelling, swimming, beach gazing sunsets….!

This coming weekend is Natas Fair at Suntec or Expo, not sure yet. It’s exhibition on travel packages. Going to book one short trip for the Aug National Day holidays. Not so much for the sun tanning on the beach because I already tanned from drying the clothes at my backyard.
