Heart Matters

Dear Friends,

A friend forwarded me a note on what one should do when experiencing a heart attack alone. Please find attached note below for your reference.

For people suffering heart attack, every second counts, especially the 30 minutes before the arrival of the ambulance.

There is a handy Chinese acupressure way to deal with this emergency. This method has been metioned earlier in one of my comments, though it was for another situation.

Do the followig acupressure exercise quickly when facing first hint of heart attack :

  • Fold the fingers of your right hand, “scratch” the inner side of your left hand using the second joint of the fingers (especially 2nd, 3rd and 4th), from wrist-line to the elbow (on the inside. Reddish patches will form, that’s okay. Do this on left hand only. Do this until condition improves.

  • Alternatively, you can use a big wooden spoon or anything handy with smooth edge to do the scratching.
  • For those with weak heart, daily practice of this will help too.

Pass this around, it saves lives.

Separately, we discussed the heart issue before, whether ” it is the wind, or the flag, or the heart that moves …”. Remember that ?

* Note : the method emailed to me earlier contains the following advice :

  • ” …Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person
whose heart is beating improperly, and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly, and Very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, deep, and  prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath, and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without  let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart, and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.

In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital……”

  1. Hmmm….that’s rather simple to do- cough & breathe hard, at the same time use right hand to scratch left hand. The website at the diagram of the man above, is difficult to read- direct translation from chinese- very bad English.

The heart is located at the left chest, only right hand is used to scratch only the left hand. The muscles activated by the right hand in doing this action will pull the heart muscles into action? The scratching of the left hand doesn’t actually benefit this left hand, except to cause the right hand muscles at the chest to pull the heart muscles. Am I right?

  2. The email message passed on by your friend about coughing repeatedly and vigorously when experiencing a heart attack has been passed around quite a bit.
I am not sure who suggested it, but for one thing, when you do get a heart attack, the pain can be very sharp and intense, and I doubt you will be able to force yourself to cough.

The hand scratching method sounds more practical. Will remember to do it. Thanks.
