Zhu Geliang (“諸葛亮”): The Macro Tuner

Dear Friends,

image from www.haifurniture.com

Some of you may be lucky enough to have used an old radio before.

Unlike the digital tuning, tuning into a particular radio station is done manually by turning the tuning nob.

Typically there are 2 tuning nobs :

  • Rough-tuner   : allows one to search over the spectrum quickly to detect various stations available,
  • Fine-tuner      : allows one to fine-tune for better sound quality once a particular station is selected via the Rough-tuner.

In previous posting The Lungs : Your Cosmic Synchronizer, we have seen our Lung-system performs the critical function of “tuning-in” to the external environment so that our Internal Qi is in-step with Jie-Qi changes.

Since this fine-tuning process occurs on a continuous basis, we can regard the Lung-system as the Fine-Tuner of our body.

  • What then is our body’s  Rough-Tuner ?

Last year was Strong Fire year (戊子年, “Wuzi-nian”), while this year is Lesser Earth year (己丑年, “Jichou-nian”).

  • One is Hot and Dry, the other is Wet and Cold. The difference couldn’t be bigger.
  • It is a big change, too big for a Fine-Tuner to cope, we need a higher ”system” to help us cross-over from the end of one year to the beginning of another year.

This higher system is the Rough-Tuner, i.e., it must be able to detect quickly the change of  the underlying tone. In radio, this would be whether it is a Chinese news station, an English music station, soap opera station etc. In cosmic forces, the underlying tone is whether it is Strong Fire with Dryness, Dampness with Coldness etc.

Recall in past postings (such as Harmonious Cosmic Motion) that Spring Qi follows Winter Qi, and that Spring Qi is governed by Liver-Qi in our body.

  • The Liver-system therefore is our body’s Rough-Tuner.

It is critical that the Liver-Qi is able to perform this incredible difficult task of enabling our body to cope from the drastic change of one underlying-tone  year to another, the failure of which will be disaster.

To ensure this happen, Liver-Qi needs to be nourished well over the Winter period. Liver-system stores “blood”, inadequacy of blood will irritate the Liver-system. That’s the reason it is traditional wisdom to eat/rest  well over the Winter period.

Zhu Geliang has mastered the art of correctly predicting the direction of change of the underlying tone, whether it was with respect to weather, human psychology or other events. He then devised strategies in advance to meet those likely challenges.

Have fun and maintain a strong Macro-Tuner. You need it critically once a year.

  1. Yes, I’m trying hard to tune into your topics! Xiaoyao2, you score top as a cool cucumber! Earlier today, the stocks & economic news were toppling everywhere & here we are calming ourselves to discuss about Zhu Geliang’s insights. Thumbs up! You managed to divert my mind to cool down.

CH, where are you? I’m finally understanding what Warren Buffet meant, abt going in for the long haul! Heheheee…..I’m learning…from a short term punter to a long haul investor!

Thanks to UOB! STI was stuck at lowest 1,600.28 for long time- signalling me to start buying & for counter 28 which is OUB. I didn’t settle for a good price till recently & bought some lots. After I had bought UOB, then this lowest level of STI gave way to fantastic new lows every other day & today is historical!

So you see, I’m stuck with UOB shares, therefore I got to go in for the long haul. Glad to have some dividends to sweeten the haul. Also heard of some rumored rights issue which may give me a way out- hopefully can bag some profits while exiting! :)

Hey, have I gained enough experience yet, to be counted in as part of your team? :)

This is for real- Recession time! I’m putting up a Recession Warfare Plan! Got to get out of this depths, can’t just wait out for it to blow over! Got to climb out of it, whatever it may take! For my quest, I’ve today hired 2 new high flyer staff- a Snr Marketing Mgr & a Marketing Mgr to ‘cheong’ for me! Got to strategize & think out of the box! Got to break the evil cycle of the domino collapsing effect!

Hi Friends, lets cheer on & be conquerors! Don’t be gloomy! We are just in Mar & we got a whole yr more to go! Cheers my friends! :)

  2. Thanks xy2 for your new postings. Suddenly you are posting so fast I hardly have time to digest!!

As for you YL, I noticed you are as energetic and as chirpy as ever, despite not having any household help and battling the recession at your company and trying to beat the Straits Index in between!!

Yeap, long term hold, my dear, only I think once again the whole world is asking if Warren Buffett’s principle of long term hold is not too outdated. But I was sort of glad to hear that even he too made some mistakes in buying an oil company when oil prices were high, so yeah, we are all human!! No one can see the future, and while we can try to make some decisions by applying all the knowledge and information and wisdom we have to make the best judgment call, things still do not happen the way we want it.

I like xy2 statements in the posting that “it is traditional wisdom to eat/rest well during the winter”!
Guess that is why bears hibernate during the winter months. Bulls don’t. And that is probably why the bears are charging now!!

  3. yes, keep your reserve. this is not an investment forum.

    refer to posting
“雨水 (”Yu Shui”) : 2nd Jie Qi”.

    have a good day.

  4. ch,

sorry for loading all the heavy postings over the last couple of weeks, thought it timely to address them due to the current season.

Stay tuned. Next Jie-Qi change, 惊蛰 (Jingzhe) is just 2 days away on Mar 5.

Talking abt recession, to quite some sector of the population, it is already Depression (which many scholars define as having 25-30% unemployment rate).

If you are a Korean in the twenties, it is Depression (40% out of job).
If you are a young graduate this year, it is Depression.

  5. Sorry Xiaoyao2 for encouraging an investment forum here. :P Couldn’t help it…..will control! :)

CH, my mum is here & will return after 1 or 2 more wks…that’s why I can chirp, otherwise, I’ll be ploughing the land! This is a breather for me.

  6. About depression: farming town mid of California is hitting 23% unemployment rate because of drought. City controls or cut the irrigation as the lands of almond plantations etc do not have enough waters after 3years of below average rain/snow on the sierras.

Here’re how the California residents will pay for the bad economies:
    - sales tax (gst) will increase 1% to 9.25-9.75% starting next month
    - state income tax top bracket increases 0.25 to 9.55%. It’s easy to hit this bracket at silion valley; any not fresh engineers will be paying tax at this tax bracket. This is not even the federal tax.
    - vehicle registration(like your road tax) increases close to 100% though still much lower than singapore.

A 100k family of 4 with 2 cars roughly will pay an extra 1000, so probably gives back the tax savings from Obama.

Federal capital gain tax (profits for stocks kept longer than a year) will be taxes 20%, increased from 15% from 2010. Fed tax for family making 250-500k increased from 33% to 36%. Deduction from mortgage interest from 35% decreases to 28% for that group.
All of which hitting hardest to the folks around silicon valley that home price for good schools are fetching close to a million. With layoff continues, I think situations are turning worse.
Houses 1.5hr south of here now 150k; bungalow 2200 sqft.
    Sentiments are “depressing”.

  7. Yep, depression everywhere.

Today in Japan, the news was that even Toyota Financial, yes, a subsidiary of the invincible Toyota, is asking to borrow about USD2 bil from the Japanese govt. because they have some debts maturing soon and they have to meet their obligations and the credit market is frozen.

No good news. I think everyone is waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel, only that the tunnel seems to be longer than we first thought.

  8. CH,

Your medical line should be doing well as usual, right? Is there a drop in clients due to recession?

Our orders are just trickling in, however I see more small orders for service repair jobs. Thank God for last yr’s big harvest to last us through.

May be getting more sales in 2nd qtr, from the sales negotiation going on now for industries like Solar, bio medical & household metalware.

Once I get orders streaming in though slowly, I’ll hire another new staff- Chief Technology Officer. There are many good employees for the picking! I’ve them lining up for employment when I see some signs of constant harvest. Previously, only had a Sales Manager & his team, now I’ve added above him, 2 senior Marketing Mgrs.

I’m expecting things to get moving in 2nd qtr when people begin to accept the current situation & start to go on with life. Hence, do their usual purchase of car, house, etc..though a bit lesser now. As everybody do their bit of moving the economy, the wheel will move again, albeit slower. :)

  9. YL, if all the market and economy “experts” talk like you, maybe we can get the wheel moving a bit. But hey, these days everyone who used to be a super optimist is a doomsday prophet, so who can feel upbeat or move on to doing the usual purchase?

But you appear very optimistic! Wah, any posts for Chief Medical officer in your company or not? Will not demand too many fringe benefits!
Everyone you hire these days seem to have a big title: Senior Marketing Manager, Chief Technology Officer!
For now, we are not yet feeling the real impact of the recession yet, but it will come, it is just a matter of time. People will tend to scale down on spending on less urgent medical problems, or try to make less visits….Eventually everyone will be affected.

Although it is said that medicine and education are probably the most recession proof, I can tell you that I have already heard that people are pulling their kids out of private schools, tuition centers and art/music lessons. A few clients have told me that their medical insurance will run out in a month’s time, so they want to do as many checkups as possible. After next month, we will have less clients. So, it will eventually trickle down to everyone. Sigh!
    :( :(

  10. at the minimum, people need energy to get on with their lives, things like basic food, shelter, transport, health and yes education.

in hk there are quite some parents who were forced to move their kids from private to public schools, there were even a few who have to terminate their college studies overseas.

hk being hk, people gets on with their lives, figuring a way out, setting up small businesses etc.

  11. Yeah, maybe the HK people are more resourceful. I like people in HK, they are rather hardworking and very resourceful. They will make do and find a way. That is what makes HK an attractive place.

But right now it is fear begetting more fear. We hear bad news everyday whether it is the papers or the TV or the internet. We then fear for our jobs or income or our investments even though some of us are less directly involved. This means naturally people will tighten their purse strings, and in turn not purchase anything or reduce spending. This leads to lower revenue for businesses and therefore they have to cut staff and we go on a merry-go-round.

Once that fear cycle is broken and people think, heck, maybe we should spend some anyways, only then can we move that wheel. But the longer the wheel stays slow moving or stationery, the heavier it gets to move it along…..

That is what I see around me everyday.

  12. ch,

    good observation.

that “wheel” is essentially the same as what I have referred to

the middle axis (posting ” 己丑年 (Ji Chou Year) : 2009, Year of Ox”).

    Recall the Middle Qi ?

  13. Hey YL, read from the papers that the Singapore landmark Merlion was hit by lightning making a gaping hole right on the top of the lion’s head. Imagine the small probability of this happening and yet it happened right on the dot.

Was there a lot of hooha there ? Merlions don’t tune well with cows, it seems. Some FengShui masters must have lots to say.

Yes, the downturn is affecting a lot of people, but look at the bright side. You get to reflect what is meaningful, do things that you’ll never get to do had you been bogged down with too much work; find ways to enjoy outings at the park, instead of at the mall. Learn to conserve. Find ways to spend more quality time with loved ones without spending money. Great lesson for fresh grads to face hardship for a start, build character ! Move other wheels .. must it necessarily be $ tagged ?

  14. mf :

Merlion is essentially “water-based”. Water is blocked by earth (as in the case of Dam blocking Water), and “earth” is what it is this year.

Merlion therefore will feel rather restricted under the “earth” umbrella.

The Middle Qi needs to turn well. Keep it up.

  15. Hi MF, so that’s why you have been missing from the blog! Having quality time with loved ones! :)

It was an embarrassment! We got to hear abt our Merlion being shot in the head via email from our Japanese agent. We were thinking, this may be a sign, that S’pore has gotten too proud & should humble itself before it’s humbled by other forces like the lightning! We are considering ourselves having reached & full of wisdom but God thinks otherwise!

Hi CH, you interested to be my Chief Medical Officer? Hahaha! Lets get serious….hmmm….maybe we can start in KL, get a gov grant for R&D to use laser to treat skin diseases & also for facial treatments. Write a good story & get salary from gov grants. Put time to good use. Who knows, we may come out with a small handheld laser for doctors to use. Patent it & then market it worldwide! :)

  16. Today is Mar 5, 惊蛰 (“Jing zhe”).

This is the day (plus minus couple of days) when “lightning” strikes, awakening and triggering the next growth cycle.

We want to see signs of positive lives over these few days, we want to see “activities”, i.e. people getting busy again for growth irrespective of economic hardship.

As said, the Yang Qi was not well nourished over the last Winter, it will be somewhat weak but none the less growth it is.

We want to see the “Bang”.

  17. hopefully it doesn’t come in a negative way such as earthquake. This week small quakes were frequent around here …

  18. xy2, today we had good weather here. The temperature is still low and we can still feel the cold, about 9 deg C, but somehow there is a feeling of spring. No wonder, it is the “Jing Zhe”.

It has been raining on and off the whole of last week and even a bit of snow two days ago (a bit late for snow for Tokyo), so yes, I think it is a time we will begin to see some spring “activities”. The days have “suddenly” gotten a bit longer, as it does not get dark so quickly, so yes, spring is round the corner. Yippee!!

  19. ch,

if it rainned on and off over the last couple of weeks, that’s to be expected, bear in mind the last Jie-Qi (lasting abt 15 days until yesterday) was 雨水 (“Yu shui”), literally means rainning, though it is not pouring rain.

As said, Yang Qi was not well nourished over last Winter so its ability to rise smoothly is somewhat weakened, resulting in a more volatile weather pattern transition into full Spring.

For a more stable Spring, we will need to wait until 春分 (“chun fen”), which is about 15 days away from now.

Enjoy the rocky ride (cold/warm) for another 15 days.

  20. Yes, xy2, thanks for the reminder. You did mention the 雨水 earlier, I sort of forgot.
Yes, usually after 春分, the weather in Japan starts to change, and we would usually feel that “spring” is in the air. It is amazing how our forefathers managed to chart the weather and so many things related to nature so well when they did not have fancy telescopes or computers!
Sometimes, I get the funny feeling that although mankind have made tremendous progress in many things, we have also NOT made much progress in many ways.
Our forefathers already knew and discovered the basic things we needed to know to live, so what we have today are just extra frills?

  21. ch,

yes, as far as art of living and natural health are concerned, we have not progressed much. In fact we probably have back-slided.

human has artificially created/destroyed many things to suit its desire that the connectivity with the natural forces has been greatly weakened. If we have electric lights at night, does it matter when we sleep or work ? that’s the general attitude, especially the younger folks.

But our DNA is a result of billions of years of accumulated wisdom, that can’t change overnight or even in a few hundred/thousand years. Our DNA is part of the nature.

And to be able to bring out the wisdom of billions of years in us, we need quietness, so quiet that we can start to listen to our own inner coded messages. Messages abt how to schronise with nature, messages abt how to live or fend off external elements such as viruses etc. We see some people are very susceptible to common cold, almost every other day. And there are those almost never catch it.

modern people think we have enough technology to win over the force of nature. Fact is, we will never, because we are a small sub-set of the universe, not its master.

And quietness is a rare commodity these days.

  22. Yes, xy2 I agree with you. Some people get the common cold so easily, I sometimes wonder what they do with their lives!!
But I realized that simple things like eating right, dressing warm and sleeping well are enough to keep from catching a cold. Of course, if everyone is super healthy, we doctors will have no business!! :) :)
But these days there is a tendency to shift towards preventive medicine, because the govt now realizes that it will save more money to keep people healthy in the first place rather than treat the sick.

  23. Down here, on 3/5, it hardly rain; kinda quite contrary to the daily (probably 80%) rains over past 2 weeks. That’s so much accurate about 雨水 …
I was waiting for real “lightnings” on 3/5, that did not happen :-)
In any case, the “seasons” are clear. I am wondering though how much portion of the northen hemisphere this calendar can apply to. For here, I have tried to observe and corelate the weather change during past year, it is quite applicable.
It will be interesting to know majority of the northern hemisphere “rain” most of the time during 雨水, if that’s really the case.

  24. ct,

Chinese calendar was developed based on observations in China, using Yellow River region as a base.

It is all relative and it is meaningful to apply this elsewhere, say in the West Coast, provided local influences (such as latitude, altitude etc) are taken into consideration. The underlying tone of Chinese calendar should remain more or less intact. (Inverse relationship need to be adjusted for Southern Hemisphere).

It should be noted that the 4-seasons cycle is essentially a cycle of Yang Qi, which I have addressed in various previous postings, with “Chun Fen” and “Qiu Fen” being the 2 space-time markers where the Yang Qi above and below the ground is about the same, thereafter there is more Yang Qi above after Chun Fen and more Yang Qi below after Qiu Fen.

It is therefore usually more misty and wet (but not pouring) before Chun Fen as Yang Qi starts to rise, bringing up along with it water vapour, which easily becomes mist/wetness as it meets “coldness” above, which is very low from ground level at this point in time.

After Li Xia, Yang Qi gets a lot stronger and can carry the water vapour a lot higher before it meets coldness above. The rain will therefore get heavier as we move towards Xia Zhi.

Similar phenomenon can be observed in other cycles, say 2×7/2×8 and 7×7/7×8 are the “chun fen” and “qiu fen” markers of human life cycle, perhaps ?

    Hope above clarifies.
