Dear Friends,

In 3 days’ time, i.e. Feb 18, 2009, it will be 雨水 (“Yu Shui”), the 2nd 节气 (“Jie-Qi”) of 己丑年 (“Ji Chou” year).
Around 雨水 (“Yu Shui”) in the Northern hemisphere, Yang-Qi has just risen to the ground level, meeting the cold air just above it , producing mist and rain. It is the first rain of the year, usually not heavy, just light rain enough to moist the soil for growth in the Spring season. (it is also the result of melting ice as Yang Qi arises).
- However, the force of Yang-Qi is still tender. The weather around 雨水 (“Yu Shui”), therefore, is quite volatile, sometimes warm, sometimes cold.
- Many people are not well prepared for this erratic warm/cold changes. The result is a higher incidence of flu and common cold.
As per posting Harmonious Cosmic Motion, the Spring Qi is rising during this time. As per posting The 5 Pointers: South, North, East, West & Middle, Spring Qi also is East, Wind, Wood, Liver System, Green etc and its characteristic is to grow outwards, to express.
At around 立春~雨水, this Spring Qi is still tender, sometimes it cannot rise properly. The preceding year was 戊子年 (“wu zi nian”) which we know was Strong Fire Year and the Yang Qi was less likely to be well rested and nurtured over the Winter period.
The weather is likely to be more erratic around this time as a result.
As for health, the Spring Qi is also the Liver Qi.
- If Liver Qi is not able to rise properly, it will be knocking around the Middle region (equivalent to ground level), causing discomfort or pain in abdominal area as well as discomfort/pain on the sides of the trunk. There is also a higher incidence of problems with tendons and dizziness.
-
For the 1st Major Qi Period (Jan 20 to Mar 20), it is influenced by 2 Windy Wood Qi’s, for older age person or people with higher collasterol level, there is a higher risk of stroke over this period, all else being equal.

“The weather around 雨水, therefore, is quite volatile, sometimes warm, sometimes cold.”
On Feb 14, 15, we had extremely warm weather for February in Tokyo, with temperatures rising close to 20 deg C during the day (more like April, spring weather). Then towards the evening of Feb 16 and today, the temperatures dropped more than 12-15 deg C and it became very much colder.
