Harmonious Cosmic Motion

Dear Friends,

The word 宇宙 (”yu zhou”) is typically translated into English equivalent as “Universe”, which is quite incorrect. “宇宙” was coined more than 3 thousand years ago in Chinese language (往古來今謂之,四方上下謂之).

  • 宇 refers to East-South-West-North and Above-Below  (i.e. x-y-z axes), which is Universe itself,
  • 宙 refers to Past-Present-Future (flow of time).

宇宙 therefore refers to Universe with time element, more appropriately Space-Time frame. (This space-time concept is more fully appreciated by the West only after Einstein’s Special Relativity). 宇宙 is therefore a dynamic entity, changing relative to time flow. A static Universe, therefore, does not exist in Chinese natural philosophy. (conversely, if the Universe is Static, then Time is irrelevant).

  • What causes the Universe to be dynamic and therefore forming the a Space-Time entity ?

It is Cosmic Forces, the same forces that we have looked at earlier in some of the previous postings.

戊子年 (”wu zi nian”, 2008 ) is a good year to discuss the topic on Cosmic Forces because it illustrates the importance of a Harmonic Cosmic Forces on the well-being of the Universe itself, as well as all beings in it as they are inevitably subjected to the same Cosmic Forces.

In posting Universal Four Seasons, we discussed the 4 phases of life in a typical cycle. More specifically :

  • Spring phase    is brought about by 春气 (”chun qi”),
  • Summer phase is brought about by 夏气 (”xia qi”),
  • Autumn phase is brought about by 秋气 (”qiu qi”),
  • Winter phase   is brought about by 冬气 (”dong qi”) respectively.
  • ( 春气, 夏气, 秋气, 冬气 refer to the Cosmic energy in each corresponding phase)
  1. Spring Qi causes the Yang Qi/Energy to rise from deep under the ground to the Earth’s surface, therefore promoting growth ;
  2. Summer Qi pushes the Yang Qi further up into the atmosphere, filling it with dynamic energy, promoting maturity and procreational energy;
  3. Autumn Qi restraints the Summer Yang Qi and causes it to descend to the ground, life energy begins to be stored (we see harvesting in this period, seeds as storage of life energy),
  4. Winter Qi further sinks the Yang Qi deep into the cold water under the ground for preservation until the following Spring Qi arrives to bring it up again and the 4 seasons cycle repeats. (In winter, the water is warm underground). Winter Qi is therefore also appropriately refered to as Storing Qi.

Note that I have also touched upon this topic in a related posting The 5 Pointers: South, North, East, West & Middle.

Therefore Spring/Summer Qi rises and then floats, Autumn/Winter Qi descends and then sinks. These four Qi work in unison to create a big wheel of rhythmic cycle. This big wheel of circular movement generates the Middle Rotating Axis (中气, “zhong qi”). This is the basis of the Harmonic Cosmic Motion “大气圆运动”.

  • This Zhong Qi is the essence of Life and is located at the surface of the Earth. Without the rhythmic movement, there will be no physical life.

Human body is a microcosm of the Universe. It is primarily made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen, the four main elements in the Universe. Human body is a small reflection of the much larger Universe. We can therefore say we possess the DNA of the Universe.

The Human body therefore also possesses similar  Wheel of Life and the central Zhong Qi :

  1. The Left side of the torso     is the Liver-system/Rising Qi, corresponds to Spring Qi,
  2. The Right side of the torso   is the Lung-system/Descending Qi, corresponds to Autumn Qi,
  3. The Upper Body above navel is the Heart-system/Maturing Qi, corresponds to Summer Qi,
  4. The Lower Body below navel is the Kidney-system/Storing Qi, corresponds to Winter Qi.
  5. The Navel region is the Spleen/Middle Axis, corresponds to Zhong Qi.

From this model, it is easy to see how health can be affected by the following 2 situations :

  1. the Outer Wheel (made up of 1,2,3,4 above) is not rotating smoothly/rhythmically or,
  2. the Inner Axis is not rotating smoothly/rhythmically.

When the Summer Qi is overly strong (as it is in 2008), the Outer Wheel movement will be overly skewed towards the South/Heart/Maturing phase, therefore affecting the whole rhythmic cycle of the natural 4 seasons. Remedial actions, both externally by the Cosmic Forces themselves, or by the body’s own internal forces, will take place. Therefore, we will see strong Water, for instance, as a counter phenomena. Therefore we will see some people are better equipped to cope than others due to the natural advantage in their Personal Cosmic Orientations.

Also note that there are natural 4 seasons in a day as well. The Body’s Wheel/Zhong Qi will behave correspondingly. Same for longer cycle. Please also refer to posting Sub-prime and Post-Conditions (後天八卦), the 後天八卦  is a more complex way to describe essentially the behaviour of  春气, 夏气, 秋气, 冬气, i.e. the Cosmic Rhythmic Motion in any cycle after the formation of an event.

It is important to note the following 3 points :

  1. When External Forces is skewed too strongly from normal, it is much harder for the smaller wheel/axis in each human body  to counter-off the unbalance forces,
  2. By rebalancing the rhythmic movement of the wheel/axis, normal health can be restored,
  3. Outer Wheel can be assisted by promoting Zhong Qi or vice versa.

As discussed earlier, the prevailing Summer Qi is overly strong this year and it is putting its load first and foremost on our Heart-system, one of the 4 elements of the Outer Wheel. As the Outer Movement is affected, so will be the central Axis, thus the Spleen-system (Digestion etc) will be impacted as well. We can counter this by strengthening the internal Winter Qi (i.e. Kidney system) as well as strenghtening the Zhong Qi (the Spleen system).

Sorry for this rather long elaboration of the Universal rhythmic Forces and its correpondence in human body. For those who have studied physics before, a comparison with Simple Harmonic Motion will be helpful. As in physics, ideal harmonic Cosmic Forces at work does not exist, they are either too strong or too weak at any one moment, with internal self correctional mechanism to correct these skewness.

You can also find a related posting in The 5 Pointers: South, North, East, West & Middle.

Well, lubricate your internal Wheel and its Axis, keep them moving as smoothly and as in-sync as possible with general Cosmic cycles. What do you think navel piercing will do to our Zhong Qi ?

  1. I suppose navel piercing would puncture some Zhong Qi and cause digestion problems, going by your explanation. How do we strengthen our Zhong Qi ? and each of the 4 seasons’ Qi ?

  2. mf :

    1. Look at the pix of London Eye (attached in the posting). In the Outer Wheel we have Left, Right, Top and Bottom, then in the middle we have the Axis.

When the middle Axis is disturbed, it will disrupt the smooth flow of all 4 major Qi’s in the Outer Wheel in addition to itself.

Whereas if there is too much Summer Qi, you can simply counter with a bit of Winter Qi to bring back circular motion.

For navel piercing, in the beginning, most likely the individual will feel great, as it agitates the middle Qi and the entire Wheel/body get excited. However, prolong agitation will exhaust the Yang Qi and with it weaken the entire Rhythmic Qi flow in the body.

For young people with good reserve of Yang Qi, the effects may not show in the short-term. They will in the longer-term.

    2. Harmonic Cosmic Motion can apply to the entire society. Say in Bolehland right now. The Middle Qi (Power that be) is definitely not moving smoothly and the Outer Wheel of the People Qi are not moving in-sync either, disintegrating from the Middle. The result will be a weaker body (entire nation) until the Rhythmic Motion is finally restored, either via repair of the Middle Qi or moving the Outer Wheel or both.

You can get the Outer Wheel to move in unison, say via a common issue, such as getting back Pulau Batu Putih from Singapore instead of hiking fuel price at this point in time (nevermind it is the right thing to do in the longer run).

    3. On strengthening Qi, please see characteristics of the 4 seasons and Zhong Qi. I think I have dealt with this a bit in the posting “Natural 4 seasons” , “Character of Spring” and “Character of Summer”. Will deal with Autumn and Winter later on.

  3. mf :

additionally on your question on strenghtening “zhong qi” and the other 4 season Qi, there are many ways, including chinese medicinal herbal formula to suit one’s situation. For handy techniques of acupressure, most have been addressed before, in postings such as “An acupoint a day keep the doctors away”, “as Good as Gold”, “The Inevitability of 7X7 for women” etc.

    To recap :
    1. Zu San Li : addressing the Zhong Qi,
    2. Taichong : addressing Spring Qi,
    3. Neiguan : addressing Summer Qi,
    4. Chi Ze : addressing the Autumn Qi (in antecubital of elbow),
    5. Taixi/Kidney acupoint : addressing Winter Qi
    6. Sanyingjiao : addressing Middle/Spring/Winter Qi

    Hope above helps and clarifies.

  4. xy2, can you elaborate more on:
“A better way is to try to move in-sync with it, like the surfer riding the waves” ?

You may have address this on other topics, but I think I lack understanding on what does it really mean by letting other smaller organs/systems move in-sync with the external forces …

  5. ct :

    well spotted.

indeed the statement as it is is open to controvesy. Actually, for this to work, the individual needs to be fit and well-trainned, just like a surfer is fit and well-trainned. The strategy therefore does not suit people in general.

Tks for spotting this. To prevent misunderstanding, I will remove the relevant part from the posting.

BTW, have you all noticed your “Avatar”, i.e. the computer generated sign next to your name in the comment ?
It might actually says something about yourself, for example, the colour of your avatar is probably your favourite colour, say colour of your undergarments. Check it out !

  6. xy2, thanks for the tips. And interesting way to apply the harmonious cosmic motion in almost any situation… ie in a family, a company, in oneself. Now that we are still in Summer Qi, I suppose we need to also consider our own PCO in order to check on whether we could be lacking in certain Qi for adjustment, right ? So, looking at my own Avatar, am I slight Winter Qi type ?

  7. I thought you are the one selecting all these Avatar with different patterns & colours for each one of us?

What about your’s? Certainly it’s not computer generated, am I right? Since it’s the symbol of Taoism. Are your common clothings’ colour, black & white? I see your blog heading is black & white. Wow, is that a Bentley wedding car? Very nice colour & the pink flowers blend so gently on it, emphasing it’s grandeur.

Aiyoh, you asked us to check if they are the colour of our underwears??? It’s embarrassingly true! I kind of like my pattern & colour; well balanced & pleasant.

Please explain how this Avatar works. How would the computer even know how to match pattern & colour? :)

Last week, due to all the hectic schedule & travelling, I felt I was succombing to the virulent flu. I prayed off course & relaxed by exercising all those acupoint pressures, that I’ve read & can remember. Then I felt that my body was balancing itself again & I know confidently, that I have overcomed the flu virus. I pressed all those acupoints that I’ve read in Xiaoyao’s blog, without caring what they are for, specifically. Just do as much as possible. Thank God, I managed to win the fight against the virus which has infected many people in my company- some very seriously. Thanks to Xiaoyao too! :)

  8. Ooooo, now that you mentioned it, I am the one given the pink avatar…..any special reason for that?
    Curious, curious!!!!

  9. my blog is published under wordpress.com, so they own the infrastructure.

The avatar is generated not by the moderator, it is generated by wordpress.com automatically. Somehow it seems to hv a tracking system.

So in short, I don’t decide the Avatar. My blog is an open blog so anyone can comment in my blog without prior invitation required and the Avatar will be generated automatically for her/him, not by my computer but by wordpress.com infrastructure. (the moderator does have the ability to block junk comments).

As to the colour, well, maybe the infrastructure knows a thing or two abt PCOs !!!

You can set up your own blog under wordpress.com account, it is free. There you can create your personal avatar, but not for your commentators. Once you are under the wordpress.com and login under your account, when commenting on other’s blog, your personal avatar will appear on their comment section.

  10. mf :

you are a fast learner. Principle of Harmonic Cosmic Motion can be applied in all situations, for it is the fundamental of progress of all events in the Universe.

    About colours :
    1. Spring Qi : Green (青) >> Wing characteristics
    2. Summer Qi : Red (赤) >> Fire characteristics
    3. Autumn Qi : White (白) >> Metal characteristics
    4. Winter Qi : Black (玄) >> Water characteristics
    5. Middle Qi : Yellow (黄)>> Earth characteristics

Now you see why Yellow is the colour of choice for Chinese Emperors (he’s in the middle of Universe !), why the Chinese have high vitality (they generally like red !), the muslims volatile and emotional (they like green) and the Japanese subtle and restraint (they like white !).

Blue? Hmmmm.. Yellow is in the Middle and interacts with all colours in the Outer Wheel. Yellow mixes with Green you probably get Blue, or Blue is younger child of matured Green ?.
So Blue might skew towards water characteristics.

Anyway, your Avatar is generated by third party, not your true self.

  11. xy2,

I am a bit disappointed!! I thought perhaps you thought my PCO matches the color pink!! :) :)

So it is just a random thingy and they gave me pink instead of blue or green or purple? OK, OK, maybe it is not so random after all……at least I want to believe that! Maybe it has a tracking system that figured I should be pink!!

Plus you commented on yellow, blue, green, white, but what about PINK?????? In between red and white?? Fire and metal then??

  12. ch :

did some research, as it turns out, the tracking system would be able to make best guess colour for you, based probably on the major colour of your computer screen etc the first time you commented on my blog. So it is afterall your PCOs! If I had the priviledge, the result incidentally might be the same.

Pink? very good guess, Red + White, with a skew towards white since the direction of Cosmic Motion is from South (Red) to West (white), never the other way round.
So essentially if Pink is what you are, then take care of your Lung-system and therefore your Autumn Qi.

  13. xy2,

Thanks. That is very sweet of you to come back to question.
I am enjoying the blog a lot. Having fun!

You may be right. My Lung system is weaker than others, from childhood asthma to allergies. Yep, have been aware of that for a while. So pink is me after all!

  14. Now I noticed the comments on color of underwear as well. I am not going to let out the secret of what color underwear I normally wear, though yes, I tend to gravitate towards pinks and similar shades when I buy my clothings.

  15. ch :

while I have analysed the Harmonius Cosmic Motion into the basic 4 Corners with a central Axis, i.e. Spring Qi, Summer Qi, Autumn Qi, Winter Qi and the Middle Qi, it is important to note that :

    1. for good health, it is the smooth running of all 4 Qi’s that’s essential. We cannot try to stop the Wheel and repair the individual element. It does not work that way. For the moment the Wheel stops, all 5 elements disintegrate and life process comes to a stop. It is the Circular Motion that’s life, not the individual elements, even if they are simply put together without motion.

    2. skewness to anyone Qi can be addressed by using the other 4 Qi’s appropriately to return to a more circular Motion.

    3. Prior to formation of an event, it is the 4 Qi’s in the corners of a Wheel that generated the Middle Qi. Once the Middle Qi is formed, the event/thing becomes possible. Thereafter, the Middle Qi is very important in ensuring the 4 Corners move smoothly and therefore health.

In short, the 4 Corners are major Qi’s in pre-formation and the Middle Qi is the most important in post-formation of an event/thing.

    4. therefore in restoring health (due to too much or too little of a particular Qi in the 4 corners), it is always important to strengthen the Middle Qi.

With this basic principle, then we will look at the fashion of exposing one’s tummy from a very different angle.

  16. from the discussion thus far, we came to the following conclusions :

    1. There are Harmonious Cosmic Cycles, however, there may exist at any one time Stronger or Weaker of any one of the 5 Qi’s as they rotate around,

    2. There is a rhythmic cycle for each Qi to dominate, that which correspond to Spring,Summer, Autumn and Winter phases, these are normal. (we see these phases in the body in a day, in a year, and thru’ our life cycles etc).

    3. As a microcosm of Universe, the human body also possesses the 5 corresponding Qi’s/energies and they respond to their equivalent in the Universe,

    4. It is therefore better to understand the 5 Qi’s as energies that have different characteristics. From this perspective, then it is possible to see Spring Qi in the body when it is Winter Qi outside.

    5. When we say a particular Qi is sick, we mean its motion is different from its normal behaviour.

From example, if you cough alot, we say your Autumn Qi is disturbed, for the normal motion of Autumn Qi is descending. Since it is not descending, it puts pressure on its corresponding organ-system (which is Lung-system) and therefore you experience cough. In this case, the remedial action is to assist the Autumn Qi to descend better, with supplemental push on the Middle Qi.

Or we are currently witnessing a very Strong Summer Qi hanging over the political atmosphere of Bolehland. It will have to find its Autumn Qi to assist the “Summer Heat” to descend, or to immediately find some Winter Qi to counter the Heat. For this remedial action to happen smoothly, the Middle Qi need to be strengthened to assist the 4 Qi’s in the Wheel to resume their normal motion properly.

  17. Seeing this term ‘Bolehland’ emerging now & then, I can’t control anymore, but to ask what this word is. Is it referring to M’sia? If yes, then why such a term to describe it?

  18. YL,

There was a term coined by the previous famous PM, “Malaysia Boleh!”, literally meaning “Malaysia Can! ”

It was probably coined to encourage Malaysians to take on some challenges, but unfortunately we end up with lots of white elephants and useless projects and footing out big bills for things not quite necessary in a small country just to show that world that Malaysia is Boleh!

So we are now a laughing stock among other nations and with our politics being more boleh than other countries, we are certainly a clownish country on display. Malaysia is not a country that will make the news a lot in foreign countries, but lately I have been receiving concerned looks and questions from my Japanese friends about how come Malaysia is so boleh we have such colorful politics that put Bollywood to shame!

  19. ch :

    sasuga desu ne!

知人者智 (他人”tajin” wo wakaru 者 ga 智 “chie”),
自知者明 (自分 no wakaru 者 ga 達人 “tatsujin”).

  20. ch boleh juga!! :) :)

  21. Hi CH, thanks so much for the detailed explanation. Really appreciate your time taken to make it understandable.

Well, as I read it, I can’t help feeling sad that M’sia has been understood overseas in this way. S’pore is closest to M’sia but I’ve not heard it, in this light before. Maybe it’s the media playing it up to discredit this nation. I’m sure there are many good things about M’sia that are not broadcasted overseas. That’s because the contented people are mostly silent & contentedly enjoy while the discontent are the noisiest & most hardworking to make themselves heard. I believe if you really look in & see who are actually making noise, you might be surprised to find that the number is not comparable to the noise made.

Empty vessels make the most noise. People hard at work don’t have time to make noise. The media must make money by making ‘best ever’ stories. A trophy should be awarded to the media for their stories which even put Bollywood to shame!

    Jadi Malaysia Boleh? :)
    Tepat Boleh lah!
Angin topan tiup pun tak runtuh kerana rakyat kuat menyokong!
    Majulah Malaysia!!!
