Dear Friends,

For a roller-coaster, it takes a huge amount of energy/effort (man’s effort) to bring the car from the bottom to the top of the curve against the gravity (nature).
However, just before the top, just a minimal effort (man’s effort) is needed to push the car over the curve. After which, the force of gravity (nature) will do the job in moving the car forward quickly without much effort.
-
In TCM, one of the most powerful concept is to take advantage of the forces of nature to assist the body to defend/cure itself of illnesses.
-
This concept has many application, the primary objective being to find the point of least resistance, giving the body the minimal push for it to gain momentum in curing itself with the best of external cosmic forces.
2008 is Strong Fire year and so far what we have witnessed are anything but positively exciting.
-
From TCM’s perspective, actually this Strong Fire can be the manna from heaven. Harnessed appropriately it can help some patients in fighting off difficult chronic illnesses that have troubled them for years.
Imagine some of the following patients with conditions that get worse in winter/old environment :
-
asthma,
-
lower back pain (with/without lower limb numbness and pain),
-
cold syndrome, generally feeling cold in the limbs etc
Above are some examples of chronic illnesses that get worse in Winter or colder environment and get better in Summer. They come every year and never seem to go away completely. Patients tend to seek help when the symptoms get worse. However, as seen in the analogy of the roller-coaster car at the bottom, it will take tremendous external effort to turn this around during the Winter.
-
An easier way is to start treating these illnesses in the middle of Summer, when the symptoms are least and patients more comfortable. It is equivalent to the roller-coaster car near the top of the curve. All they need is a small external push and the Summer energy will help maintain the momentum forward to fight the illnesses. (this is called 冬病夏治 “dong bing xia zhi”, i.e. treating winter illnesses in summer.)
-
The Strong Fire of 2008 will make it much easier to help push the patients over the top of curve against their Winter/cold illnesses.
Separately, there is a strong tendency for people to take cold/very cold drinks or foods in Summer. From TCM’s perspective, “cold” is one of the most destructive element to human health. It accumulates bit by bit over time, just like the heavy metals.
-
When cold accumulates upto certain level, it will start to block the channels/meridians, causing numbness and pain. When the cold accumulates in inner organs and deeper regions, it will create condition for tumour/cyst growth.
-
Cold is also Enemy #1 to women, especially when it attacks the lower abdomen region. It causes all sorts of gynecological illnesses. Infertility is one of the result. (Any wonder why families tend to be larger in tropics than colder countries, all else being equal ?). It is trendy these days amongst young girls to expose their abdomen. What do you think may happen to them later ?
We can also do the reverse, i.e., start medical treatment in winter for illnesses that will get worse in Summer but improve in Winter or colder environment.
Have fun leveraging on the power of cosmic forces, in the right direction and don’t overshoot.

Wah, you know how to speak our language!
‘Manna from Heaven’! Awesome!
Your photo above is invisible but I can imagine it, since you have given the description.
Oh, now can see the picture already. This is one game that I will never take & have never taken. Even a small one, accompanying my child, I had to close eyes & ‘tahan’ for it to be over. I remembered doing a more steep one but less than the one above, I almost gave up my spirit while negotiating the hardest part. After that, never want to do it again!
This is a positive article consoling us about all the tough times created by the cosmic force this year. For those who are grumbling, now we can appreaciate the strong fire year a bit
Agree with xiayao2 about the conditions that get worse in winter/cold months. However until and unless the patient understands that the concept about heat/cold/blocked channels etc, it is hard to explain to them and get their cooperation. I have clients who have full blast air conditioning on while they suffer from asthma. Plus in western medicine, there is no cold/warm/hot/damp concept, so it makes it more difficult to explain.
For issues like back pain or any kind of pain due to injury, xy2 got a strong point, it is the blocked channels. One word which stuck in my head when I read some TCM books was 痛是不通、通是不痛 meaning there is pain only when the channels are blocked and if the channels flow well, there is no pain. This can also be explained in western medicine…assume you have an injury, say to your muscle, there is always localized swelling, meaning the flow of fluids (i.e. circulation whether lymphatic or blood) is blocked in one way or another, leading to a backlog of fluids accumulating in the injured area and surrounding. This puts pressure on the nerves and transmits as pain. That is why many times warm baths/massage etc works or at least provides relief because the aim of the treatment is to reduce or remove the blockage.
xiaoyao2, Thanks for the reminder on warm drinks and food. Yeah, have tried to avoid cold drinks as far as possible for a number of years. Even in hot summer….warm drinks!! warm drinks!!Keeps the qi flowing.
Well about exposing the tummy and being fashionable, well, if you are young and twenty, that is OK, I guess. The body is able to compensate to some extend?? But fashion is more important than health when you are 20!
That reminds me, there is a real fad in Japan where older women like to wear RED hot panties and underwear. This is supposed to be good…I guess it is just the redness = warmth that is the sales point? Whole streets are devoted to selling red panties for older women! Or maybe red does radiate some heat? Of course, bras/ panties that radiate infra red radiation etc. are hot sellers here too especially in winter. To some extent, TCM concept of warm and cold is quite well understood in everyday life in Japan, so keeping warm is still a priority among women.
ch:
red underwear for older women? well, that will definitely work in Japan with fairly cold winter. Women over there are exposed to more cold and wetness than the mainland, therefore more risk of cold accumulation.
Red will definitely keep their vitality up and energy against the cold, though with this year’s Strong Fire, they may not need red as much. Or differently put, too much may send them thru’ the roof !
WRT pain, in addition to 不通则痛 (blocked channels cause pain), 不荣则痛 is another cause, i.e. lack of qi/blood deficiency in a particular region also causes pain.
